The Art Leaders Gallery in West Bloomfield Township will host an exhibit in March featuring more than 70 works of art created by Theodor Seuss Geisel (aka Dr. Seuss).
William Dreyer, curator of The Art of Dr. Seuss — Rare Editions Event, says the exhibit includes Dr. Seuss’ private collection of paintings and sculptures created throughout a 70-year period. He says Dr. Seuss began his career as an editorial cartoonist in the 1920s, and his work quickly evolved to include illustrations, sculptures, oil paintings, and children’s books.
Dr. Seuss wrote and illustrated The Cat in the Hat, Green Eggs and Ham, and How The Grinch Stole Christmas, and was a contributing illustrator for Vanity Fair and Life. He created 44 children’s books, more than 400 World War II political cartoons, and hundreds of advertisements.
“(Dr. Seuss) … forged a new genre of art that falls somewhere between the Surrealist Movement of the early 20th century and the inspired nonsense of a child’s classroom doodle,” Dreyer says.
The free exhibit runs from March 5-31.
Art Leaders Gallery, located at 33806 Northwestern Highway, is a fine art gallery with styles ranging from contemporary to traditional. The gallery has a 10,000-square-foot showroom with original oil paintings, limited editions, sculptures, hand-blown glass, and home accessories.
