Yad Ezra in Berkley was founded in 1990 to provide kosher food to vulnerable Jewish families in southeast Michigan. The organization served an average of 250 families every month in 1990. Currently, it serves an average of 1,200 impoverished families with food, health care, and household goods every month. Along with everyday foods, Yad Ezra distributes appropriate foods to enhance the recipient’s celebration of each Jewish holiday. Jewish families who fit within the established financial guidelines — or within 250 percent of the National Poverty Guidelines — are eligible to receive a food package from Yad Ezra around once every four weeks.
