Washtenaw Literacy is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization in Ypsilanti that helps individuals improve their reading, writing, math, and English as a second language skills. Founded in 1971, the core program the organization offers is personal tutoring. The one-on-one sessions allow adult learners to set goals meaningful to them and work to achieve them. The program has gone virtual since March 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Open tutoring is also on hiatus, but the program offers a classroom-like environment where multiple tutors are working with multiple learners. It says that more than 90 percent of learners in the personal tutoring program reach one or more of their goals.
