The Detroit-based Skillman Foundation is a private philanthropy organization that serves as a champion for Detroit children, helping them to achieve their highest aspirations by strengthening K-12 education, after school learning opportunities, and college and career pathways. It is focused on education and economic well-being and works to develop partnerships that can help better services for children in these areas. The foundation works to support My Brother’s Keeper Detroit, an initiative that helps boys and young men of color succeed; Launch Michigan, an alliance of education, business, civic, and other leaders that works to build a thriving public education system; the Detroit Children’s Fund, which works to ensure exceptional learning and developmental opportunities for Detroit youth; the Cody Rouge Initiative, a private-public partnership focused on helping the Cody Rouge neighborhood on the west side of Detroit; and the Coalition for the Future of Detroit School Children, which brings together Detroit leaders and targets priorities for the city’s public schools. The foundation also works to get young people college and career ready as well as leadership ready, supporting efforts that help them develop and employ leadership skills, influence civic change, and grow societal understanding of the importance of youth leadership. The Skillman Foundation’s team is working remotely and continues to provide support to Detroit children during the COVID-19 pandemic.
