The BIG Art is an artist-led, 501(c)(3) nonprofit, founded in 2022 in Highland Park, with a mission to cultivate a large, flexible arts space and supportive arts community to nurture artists, engage audiences, and enrich the city of Detroit and its arts scene. Its goal is to transform a large, blighted 110,000-square-foot industrial building and office building on 3.7 acres in Detroit — directly adjacent to the Joe Louis Greenway — into a multi-functional arts facility and gathering space. The plan is to create 60 artist studios in the office block and intermediate industrial spaces. The 45,000 square feet of 25- to 38-foot-high industrial bays will become an events space for art fairs, special exhibitions, and performing arts, along with commercial offerings such as a café, a restaurant, and galleries that will open onto the greenway.
