Street Democracy is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization based in Detroit that seeks to give those in the region a society where institutions operate as systems of opportunity, provide legal capabilities, and represent indigent people. It offers programs like Street Outreach Court Detroit, a specialty court at the 36th District Court in downtown Detroit that recognizes the efforts of homeless people to address the root causes of their homelessness as “payment” for certain civil infractions and misdemeanors. Since 2012, more than 600 people have graduated from the program. The organization also provides advocacy for those it serves.
