Square One Education Network, a nonprofit foundation in Southfield, provides students and teachers with science, technology, engineering, and math learning opportunities. In its 27 years, the network has completed 743 challenges to engage students in STEM and help build a high-tech talent pipeline. The network has 85 area schools involved in these challenges. Through the network, teachers are given expertise and technology to support students, who complete the challenges. Among the options for vehicle design challenges offered is an underwater vehicle, autonomous vehicle, and miniature vehicle. Students and teachers form teams to create their vehicles then compete with it against other teams. Kettering University and Washtenaw Community College are among higher education partners, and the Michigan International Speedway and the American Center for Mobility are two of the network’s industry partners.
