People’s Community Services of Metropolitan Detroit is a nonprofit organization that was established to provide social services to local neighborhoods. It was founded in 1955 when several Protestant faith-based settlement houses and community centers merged to form the present-day organization. At the core of the organization’s mission is to offer services for youth and senior citizens as well as community development. However, they now offer several programs that help local communities in other ways including substance abuse prevention, home care assistance, and food commodities. People’s Community Services also has a Senior Day Time Center in Hamtramck that opened in 1977. The center is a full-service agency staffed by both medical and social work professionals. It offers daytime care for seniors who need extra help with daily activities or have Alzheimer’s disease or dementia. It also offers a wellness center to promote healthy lifestyles and habits. On top of the Senior Day Time Center, People’s Community Services has a location in Detroit and one in Hamtramck. While the organization has closed temporarily due to the COVID-19 pandemic, staff is working remotely to help their clients.
