Since coming to Detroit in 1925, the National Council of Jewish Women has worked to improve the lives of women, children, and families. In 2004 the NCJW completed the All Kids Playground in Waterford Township, which was metro Detroit’s first playground designed for children of all abilities. Complete with transfer platforms, ramps, and other safety features, the playground is the perfect place for imaginative and inclusive adventures. The organization also sponsors free field trips for classes of special needs students. The NCJW also operates the Council Resale shop that offers affordable fashionable clothing, books, and accessories for both adults and children. All proceeds go back into the organization and are distributed among its services. Also serving as an advocacy group, the NCJW has organized trips to Lansing to lobby legislators on the topics of social justice, LGBTQ+ civil rights, and women’s health and reproductive justice. The organization also sponsors educational programs including a book club, trips to museums, luncheons, and more. The organization operates a Kosher Meals On Wheels program in cooperation with Jewish Family Services, which can provide two meals daily up to five times a week for those who are homebound, disabled, or unable to prepare their own meals. With additional precautions in place, this program has been continuously operating through the COVID-19 pandemic.
