Gretchen C. Valade Jazz Center Grand Opening
The invite-only grand opening of the Gretchen C. Valade Jazz Center on the Wayne State University campus in Midtown Detroit took place on Aug. 29 on the eve of the annual Detroit Jazz Festival. The center, named for the late Carhartt heiress who was a passionate jazz enthusiast and supporter, is a state-of-the-art performance venue (formerly Hilberry Theatre) located at 4715 Cass Ave. It is a partnership between WSU and the Detroit Jazz Festival Foundation. // Photographs by Christine MJ Hathaway
