Detroit-based General Motors’ Social Investment arm looks to create smart, safe, and sustainable communities around the world. It invests primarily in causes that promote economic growth through STEM education, vehicle and road safety, and community development. It also writes grants, with a focus on organizations in Detroit, and offers charitable event sponsorships. The arm offers STEM mentorship to students, especially those from underrepresented and diverse groups; works to increase seat belt and restraint usage, decrease impaired and distracted driving, and increase awareness of safe road environments; and improves communities by increasing basic literacy and technical skills for jobs, increasing access to food, housing, transportation, and financial education, and creating improved public spaces in communities.
