The Fragile X Association of Michigan in Troy offers educational and emotional support, promotes public and professional awareness, and advances research toward improved treatments and a cure for Fragile X and its associated disorders. Fragile X syndrome is a genetic condition that causes varying degrees of mental impairment from mild learning disabilities to severe cognitive impairment. It is the most common inherited form of cognitive impairment known and a leading known cause of autism. The syndrome is caused by a gene that interferes with the formation of a protein normally found in the brain. While organization’s meetings have been postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it hosted its 21st Annual Golf Outing on Saturday, Sept. 12.
