Forgotten Harvest in Oak Park was formed in 1990 to fight food insecurity and hunger. It annually rescues an average of 40 million pounds of surplus nutritious food. The organization collects excess prepared and perishable food from more than 700 donor locations, including grocery stores, fruit and vegetable markets, restaurants, caterers, dairies, farmers, wholesale food distributors, and other health department-approved sources. This donated food, which would otherwise be lost, is delivered free of charge to more than 220 emergency food providers in the metro Detroit area. It provides free food distributions six days a week year-round across the tri-county area, but its team works to source specific items for holiday meals in November and December. On Nov. 16, the organization is sponsoring the Ginyard Foundation’s Annual Community Turkey and Food Giveaway at 15853 Hamilton in Highland Park. On Nov. 25, it’s partnering with River Rouge Schools for the 10th Annual “Heart Work Is Hard Work” Turkey Giveaway at River Rouge High School, 1460 W Coolidge Hwy. in River Rouge.
