Located in Ann Arbor, Food Gatherers was established in 1988 as Michigan’s first food rescue program. It works to alleviate hunger and eliminate its cause in the community. The nonprofit organization rescues food that would otherwise go to waste from more than 300 local sources including food retailers, restaurants, and food wholesalers. The organization is committed to distributing safe, usable, nutritious, and delicious food as well as working for equity and providing people with access to food, shelter, meaningful work, dignity, and freedom. Food Gatherers is governed by a board of directors and operated by 30 staff people and 7,500 volunteers. In 2019, it distributed 6.6 million pounds of food to those in need.
