Family Literacy Center is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization in Lapeer that seeks to increase literacy through support and empowerment. For adult students, the organization helps them earn their GED through individual tutoring at no cost. It also offers adult basic skills tutoring for those who need to improve their reading or math skills, and ESL and citizenship tutoring for those wishing to improve their English or study to obtain U.S. citizenship. Family programs include playgroups, designed for children five and younger; kindergarten readiness for children aged three to five; family learning activities and games, or F.L.A.G., is meant to show parents fun ways to build their children’s skills by playing games and doing activities with them; and child tutoring for those who need to gain confidence in their skills.
