Since 1891, Eastern Market Partnership has been providing fresh and healthy local food choices for metro Detroit citizens. In the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, it has furthered its commitment to the community and supporting those who are most in need. EMP has been providing weekly deliveries of healthy food to Vista Maria, Alternatives for Girls, Matrix Human Services, D.L.I.V.E., Brilliant Detroit’s Osborn, Springwells Community Houses, and senior housing sites. It also is offering online sales and pickup options. The market is open with social distancing restrictions and personal protective equipment measures in place. In an effort to make healthy food options more accessible to the communities within metro Detroit, EMP has been operating mobile pop-up farm stands and supporting neighborhood markets in areas where nutrient rich food is otherwise hard to find. Almost all of these neighborhood markets and pop-up stands accept Bridge Card Double Up Food Bucks or other incentives so that everyone has access to the products. EMP also aims to support food makers through two programs it has set up to grow the local food economy. Detroit Kitchen Connect provides low-cost kitchen space for chefs to prepare their foods and meals, while Grow Eastern Market connects local farmers and chefs in an effort to make sure chefs have the best ingredients possible and that those ingredients are being put to good use.
