Detroit’s Downtown Boxing Gym is a nonprofit organization that supports students ages 8-18 through free after-school programs and food donations. The Downtown Boxing Gym is planning to reopen soon to provide a safe place for kids to go while their parents are at work during the day. The DBG team will take precautions to prevent the spread of COVID-19. These include additional deep cleanings of their buildings and vans, health screenings for everyone entering buildings, and placing markers and graphics inside the gym to keep everyone six feet apart. DBG drivers and coaches continue to deliver food and supplies and offer virtual support to their students and families. DBG’s mission is to empower students to be positive and productive members of society through education, athletics, mentorship, and intervention. The organization currently serves 150 students across Detroit and the nearby suburbs, with more than 1,300 children on its waiting list. Every donation helps shrink the waiting list and serve more students. Since opening in 2007, DBG has maintained a 100-percent high school graduation rate among its students.
