Southfield’s Comer Foundation seeks to improve Detroit and its surrounding communities by supporting educational, economic, and social development. Jimmie E. Comer, owner of Comer Holdings, created the namesake foundation in 2010. More than a decade later, the foundation’s main focus areas are charitable giving, education (specifically in math and science), bolstering communities, and fostering community partnerships. Ultimately, the foundation’s primary goal is to improve young people’s well-being, mainly through education and development. The foundation offers scholarships and grants to support people in furthering their education. A major initiative of the foundation is its Student Aid Program, which similarly provides benefits for students furthering their education, offering support for everything from tuition, supplies, medical care, fees, and transportation.
