The Coalition on Temporary Shelter (COTS) in Detroit’s Midtown district is dedicated to providing the city’s homeless families with shelter and services to help them attain self-sufficiency. COTS is working to distribute food and clothing donations to families in need in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic. While they cannot currently take used item donations because of health concerns, they have set up an Amazon Crisis Management Wish List to aid in their need of health and cleaning products to keep families safe. COTS has a housing-first philosophy so that every family is guaranteed a roof over their head. It offers emergency housing for those in immediate need of shelter as well as more permanent options such as apartment housing provided by sponsors. The services go beyond housing through programs such as the Passport to Self Sufficiency initiative, which helps families get back on their feet and aims to keep them there. The initiative helps guide families through their economic hardships, maintain healthy well-being, and provide educational opportunities and career development services.
