Building Families First Community Organization, which has locations in Detroit and Livonia, works to cultivate strong families by helping them become fiscally responsible and independent of governmental assistance. The organization develops affordable, energy-efficient homes for their clients by updating properties that are in established neighborhoods. It also offers a lease to purchase program and property management assistance. Mentors assess families to determine the needs and goals of each one, and each family receives financial coaching that teaches them how to budget, save, manage debt, and build credit. All programs are backed by research in behavioral economics. The nonprofit also offers youth development programs designed to offer middle and high school students academic support and assistance through an afterschool program, summer program, youth leadership program, and group for teens.
