Birth Detroit works to offer Detroit women safe, quality, and loving care through pregnancy, birth, and beyond. The nonprofit organization is raising funds for Birth Detroit Care, a prenatal and postpartum care clinic that opened in October at Brilliant Detroit’s Fitzgerald House, 16919 Prairie St. Birth Detroit also plans to open the city’s first freestanding birth center in 2021, which will provide a homelike environment for midwives to provide prenatal, birth, and postpartum care. The birth center is supported in part by a $250,000 planning grant from the W.K. Kellogg Foundation. Most major health insurers cover birth center care, and Medicaid is required to cover birth center care. Maternal and infant health disparities disproportionately affect Black families, according to the organization.
