Appropriate Technology Collaborative, based in Ann Arbor, consists of an international community of engineers, architects, business professionals, development experts, students, and volunteers to solve some of the world’s problems. One of the challenges the collaboration is working to eradicate is poverty, where technical training and social business programs that protect public health and the environment is shared with those living in underserved communities. To that end, ATC works with university engineering students in Michigan and Guatemala for solar demonstrations and technology prototyping. All ATC programs, which include Detroit Solar, Mayan Power and Light, and others, create awareness of technology and access to it. The work of this collaboration creates opportunities for access to technology and resources to prevent environmental degradation that would not otherwise exist for many in impoverished communities. In turn, it hopes to grow self-sufficient economies using appropriate technologies to improve the quality of life.
