Detroit-based Alternatives For Girls works to help homeless and high-risk girls and young women avoid violence, teen pregnancy, and exploitation, and help them be safe, grow strong, and make positive changes in their lives through support, resources, and opportunities. The organization continues to seek donations of money and supplies. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the organization is only accepting cleaning and disinfectant products, hygiene products, canned and non-perishable foods, cases of bottled water and juice boxes, new women’s socks and underwear in their original sealed packages, non-contact thermometers, 91 percent rubbing alcohol, masks and gloves, and gift cards for gas, food, and other necessities. A Virtual Role Model Recognition Event and Auction took place on Thursday, April 23, sharing the organization’s success stories and honoring women who were named 2020 Role Model Honorees: Laura Chavez of Flagstar Bank, Denise Ilitch of Ilitch Enterprises, and Palencia Mobley of the Detroit Water and Sewerage Co. Alternatives For Girls provides shelter that includes counseling, education help, job readiness, and life skills; prevention for girls at risk of gang involvement, drug or alcohol abuse, early pregnancy, and school truancy; and outreach, or helping teens and young women engaged in prostitution, drug use, domestic violence, and gang involvement.
