ALS of Michigan in Southfield is a nonprofit that provides support and services to those who have amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, as well as helping their family members and caregivers. Also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, ALS is one of the few diseases with no known cause, cure, or treatment and is a debilitating and devastating condition that attacks the body’s muscles, making it hard to move, speak, swallow, and eventually breathe. Services the organization provides include loans of adaptive equipment such as walkers, wheelchairs, ramps, and eating utensils; in-home aides to give family members a break from 24-hour care; transportation assistance, speech therapy, and equipment so individuals can continue communicating with their loved ones; support groups for “pALS” and their families; seminars on managing ALS and other needed support.
