Ypsilanti’s Eastern Michigan University has partnered with Detroit’s Marygrove College to help displaced Marygrove students finish their degrees at EMU. Marygrove announced it would close permanently in June, and the closure will be effective after the fall semester.
The agreement runs from Dec. 15, 2019 to Dec. 31, 2020.
The teach-out agreement is available to Marygrove graduate students whose current program aligns with EMU’s. Marygrove cut its undergraduate programming in 2017 due to burgeoning debt and decreased enrollment.
EMU will accept all of the transcripted credits earned at Marygrove and count them toward degrees from EMU under Higher Learning Commission guidelines. Former Marygrove students will earn their degrees in about the same amount of time that would have been required at Marygrove.
EMU also will waive the application fee and the maximum transfer credit hours policy. Marygrove students also will get financial aid packages consistent with that of incoming EMU students, and former Marygrove students will not pay a cost per credit hour at Eastern that is higher than the cost was at Marygrove.
Finally, former Marygrove students will have access to resources and support services that were available at Marygrove.
“As a university dedicated to the education of graduate students, Eastern Michigan welcomes admissible students currently attending Marygrove College to any of the majors available at the university,” says Rhonda Longworth, provost and executive vice president of academic and student affairs at EMU.
Marygrove operated for 92 years in Detroit and has started its P-20 Partnership, a cradle-to-career educational partnership that, at full capacity, will include day care, public pre-K through high school, student teaching opportunities for students from the University of Michigan, and wrap-around services for families.
