Kidpreneur, a Wixom-based program that offers technology and programming-focused classes for kids, will open its second classroom location near Oakland Mall in Madison Heights in September.
Thanh Tran, founder of Kidpreneur, says after offering day-camp classes in Troy last year and seeing a successful turnout, he wanted to open a space in the area.
The new 2,000-square-foot center, at 32640 Concord Dr., will offer after-school classes for students in kindergarten through the eighth grade. Subjects include robotics, computer coding, Minecraft, and digital arts.
“Our goal is to teach (programming skills to students) so they can retain this stuff (before high school),” Tran says. “Kids graduating from our programs and going into their freshman year of high school will be equipped with this knowledge and will be able to compete.”
He says classes run from three to nine months, and will teach kids how to build their own server, how to code with Java, and design a website, among other skills.
“By 2020, there won’t be enough computer programmers to meet the demand,” Tran says. “Our mission is to help reduce that gap and to get more kids into computer programming.”
Tran says Kidpreneur has plans to expand into at least one more location in Michigan and is considering Ann Arbor. The company also plans to expand nationally.
The Kidpreneur Madison Heights location will hold a grand opening celebration on Sept. 4, with classes starting after Labor Day.
