Wayne County Community College District in downtown Detroit will break ground tomorrow on a new $25 million building that will focus on health, wellness, education, and real-world career opportunities. The new WCCCD City Center will be located at Fort and Howard streets, next to the WCCCD Downtown Campus. Completion of the facility is scheduled for spring, 2019.

City Center is the final construction project laid out in the District’s Pathways to Transformation strategic plan. That plan led to the completion of additional campuses and campus extensions including the Mary Ellen Stempfle University Center in Harper Woods, the Michigan Institute for Public Safety Education (MIPSE) in Taylor, and the Heinz C. Prechter Educational and Performing Arts Center (EPAC) located at the Downriver Campus in Taylor.

“City Center ushers in a new era in providing the resources and infrastructure for interdisciplinary programs,” says Curtis L. Ivery, chancellor of WCCCD. “We have always worked to provide pathways to better lives for our students and the construction of this site allows us to add tremendous value to the region in addition to training students who both want and need to excel in their careers. City Center will also provide a home for the College’s Wildcat Basketball team along with other athletic activities and entertainment events.”

Programs offered at the facility will include biotechnology, hydroponics, aquaponics, fitness training, sports management, sports medicine, and kinesiology.

“Our students will reap the benefits of many years of planning and preparation,” says Mary Ellen Stempfle, chairman of the WCCCD Board of Trustees. “We are most proud of the execution of our Transformation Plan. The District over the past 20 years has managed hundreds of millions of dollars on capital improvement projects with every single initiative coming on board, on time, and within budget.”

Hannah-Neumann/Smith in downtown Detroit is the architect for the City Center. The Tooles Group in Detroit is the project’s construction firm.

WCCCD is the largest urban community college in Michigan. The college offers a multi-campus district with six campus locations that serve more than 70,000 credit and non-credit students annually across 36 cities and townships, and more than 500 square miles.
