Walsh College Launches Automotive Cybersecurity Concentration


Walsh College in Troy today announced the creation of a new academic concentration in automotive cybersecurity. The program will officially launch in Winter 2018 and take an experiential and an applied approach to produce qualified automotive cybersecurity professionals to help the auto industry secure and expand as the field continues to grow.

As multiple networks, control units, and computers are added to modern vehicles, the concentration is an expansion of Walsh College’s Fundamentals of Automotive Cybersecurity course. The class was the first of its kind nationally when it launched last spring. The new concentration will go further into the industry and include such courses as advanced automotive penetration testing and threat analysis, and connected automotive ecosystems and threat analysis. The program’s goal is to help students understand the challenges, risks, and opportunities of the continually evolving automotive industry.

The concentration was developed by Dave Schippers, a certified information systems security professional and assistant professor of information technology and cybersecurity at Walsh College. He believes the concentration differs from others by combining engineering and cybersecurity concepts to deliver a multi-faceted education.

“The automotive industry is experiencing a significant shift of technologies within vehicles, making the need for automotive cybersecurity paramount,” says Schippers. “The concept of connected, autonomous, or self-driving vehicles is being actively researched, designed, and tested. The technology innovations, customer expectations, and future direction of transportation are all fusing to create a dramatic, new vertical destined to transform the automotive and transportation industries.”
