With the return of Wicked to the Detroit Opera House next month, Twelve Oaks Mall in Novi is making room on its lower level for a display dedicated to the hit Broadway musical.

Starting Friday, visitors to the shopping center at I-96 and Novi Road can walk through Glinda the Good’s bubble, view the “Behind the Emerald Curtain” museum display, and take a photo in Oz. Also part of the promotion, which runs through Dec. 14, is the “Passport to Oz,” which includes special offers from nearly 40 retailers.

Like Great Lakes Crossing Outlets in Auburn Hills, Twelve Oaks has also opened re-creations of the Ice Palace from Disney’s Frozen, offering hands-on activities and photo opportunities through Dec. 24. More and more, shopping malls are programming any and all open areas throughout the holidays as a way to drive additional business.

“The Wicked partnership builds on successful promotions done at several other Taubman centers,” says Emily Taucher, spokeswoman for Twelve Oaks.

Wicked, which has grossed more than $3.4 billion worldwide, tells the story of two friends who meet in the land of Oz and grow up to become the Wicked Witch of the West and Glinda the Good. The musical currently has nine productions around the world.
