TÜV SÜD America Inc. has opened an environmental testing laboratory in Auburn Hills.

The company is a subsidiary of German-based TÜV SÜD, which is a global provider of testing, inspection, and certification services. The new lab will allow the company to work as a third-party independent test laboratory for EV batteries in North America.

TÜV SÜD broke ground for the Auburn Hills lab in 2021, and the lab is now ready to offer its services to accommodate the expanding EV market and increasing EV battery sizes.

“Today marks an exciting milestone as we open our state-of-the-art environmental testing laboratory in Auburn Hills, solidifying our commitment to driving excellence in EV battery and system solutions,” says Johannes Bussmann, CEO and chairman of the board of management of TÜV SÜD.

“Through our $44 million investment, TÜV SÜD’s largest ever in a laboratory site, we will continue to innovate and accelerate the transition towards a cleaner and more sustainable transportation ecosystem.”

The electricity for the new EV lab is 100 percent compliant with MIGreenPower, a program dedicated to putting more clean energy on the grid. Additionally, TÜV SÜD’s design and construction of the laboratory includes other environmentally friendly features directed towards lowering the overall carbon footprint of the facility.

The features include the planting of more than 200 trees on site, the use of regionally sourced materials during construction, and the installation of LED automatic lights throughout the facility.
