Trinity Health Oakland in Pontiac has announced details of its plans to construct a new, $48 million Emergency Department on the hospital’s campus along Woodward Avenue.

The Emergency Department will remain fully operational and continue to operate 24/7 until construction of the new space is completed in 2027.

“A new Emergency Department represents a significant investment in our hospital and in our community, which will meaningfully improve patient flow and position us to provide more efficient, timely care to our patients,” says Dr. Fabian Fregoli, president and chief medical officer of Trinity Health Oakland.

“The upgrades will also address the specialized needs of patients with behavioral health issues, ensuring they receive highly compassionate, effective support. Taken together, these improvements will elevate the quality of care we deliver to our patients and the overall experience they have while under our care.”

Construction of the new Emergency Department broke ground in June 2024 and will include the following upgrades:

  • The footprint of the Emergency Department will double in size — roughly 50,000 square feet — compared to the existing space, which is approximately 19,000 square feet. This also will result in larger patient care rooms and spaces to enhance comfort and healing.
  • A dedicated behavioral health unit that will increase our capacity to serve patients and provide care in a private, dignified setting.
  • Dedicated space for pediatric-focused care.
  • A newly constructed ambulance entrance designed to streamline the process for EMS vehicles and improve their turnaround time for patient drop-offs and re-deployments.
  • An enhanced lobby aimed at creating a more efficient and smooth triage process for patients.
  • New and additional trauma bays.

“All of our doctors, nurses, and support staff are really excited, because we know the value of improved patient flows and facility upgrades, and how they can make a significant impact on the patient experience,” says Dr. Rahul Mehta, chair of Emergency Medicine at Trinity Health Oakland. “As the demand for advanced medical services continues to grow, new and improved facilities will enable us to meet that demand with greater efficiency and precision. The upgraded facilities will allow us to deliver the highest standard of care, ensuring each and every patient receives the swift, expert treatment they deserve in a state-of-the-art environment.”

Trinity Health Oakland’s Emergency Department is home to one of Oakland County’s leading trauma centers, verified by the American College of Surgeons as a Level II center. This status ensures patients with serious injuries receive top priority and have immediate access to a comprehensive range of resources, including trauma surgery, anesthesia, critical care, radiology, and other essential services.

The hospital’s Thrombectomy-Capable Stroke Center is the first in the nation to be certified by The Joint Commission. The Emergency Department provides comprehensive emergency care in cardiology and orthopedics and treats 57,000 emergency visits and 5,000 observation visits annually.

Construction of the new and expanded Emergency Department is being made possible through contributions from community donors, who already have covered nearly half the cost of the project.
