The newly launched Sycorax Electric Cruises is now offering the first 100-percent electric boat charter cruises in southeast Michigan.

A zero-emissions cruise aboard the Sycorax is the perfect way to celebrate a birthday, a bachelor/ette party, an anniversary or engagement, an office happy hour, or just a relaxing summer day on the water while doing no harm to the Great Lakes.

The company’s daily brunch and sunset cruises voyage over the Detroit straits (Detroit River, Lake St Clair, and Lake Erie) from May through October and are helmed by a U.S. Coast Guard-certified captain.

The X Shore Eelex 8000 cruiser melds Swedish maritime craftsmanship with innovative technology solutions that contribute to a future free of fossil fuels.

X Shore has won multiple awards for design and innovation, including the German Design Award Gold (2022), the European Power Boat of the Year (2022), and the CICERO Shades of Green AS Dark Green rating (the highest rating).

Husband and wife duo Anthony and Allison Guilliom founded Sycorax Electric Cruises after seeing the Eelex 8000 at the Detroit Boat Show and falling in love with it.

“We’re both avid about being on the water, be it scuba diving, snorkeling, swimming, or boating, and when we saw the Eelex at the boat show, we came up with an idea for sharing our love of the water with the public,” says Anthony Blair Guilliom.

“We were very impressed by the green technology that X Shore has created. It’s absolutely top of class. They didn’t just stick an electric motor on a boat — they built it from the ground up as a powerful zero-emissions vessel.”

The boat name, Sycorax, comes from the fearsome sea witch in William Shakespeare’s play “The Tempest;” the Guillioms felt the name nicely suited their “witchy” electric vessel.

“The transition to electric propulsion in boating holds tremendous promise and excitement in preserving our beautiful waterways,” said Elk Rapids Sales Manager Riley Chadwell. “As the Great Lakes dealer, the Elk Rapids Marina is proud to be playing a part in promoting customer happiness found on the water through X Shore’s fully electric boats.

“Business owners like the Guillioms are not only embracing this industry advancement but also contributing to the evolution of the traditional boater’s mindset as we work to focus on building a greener and more sustainable future together.”

All cruises depart from Stanton Yards marina (9666 E. Jefferson Ave.), directly across from the Detroit Yacht Club. Stanton Yards has a rich history as an epicenter for boating activity in the region dating back to World War II when it manufactured warships. Just last month, the marina unveiled ambitious plans to redevelop the property into a waterfront cultural arts destination.

“Eco-conscious boats like the Eelex are an important element of my long-term vision for Stanton Yards marina,” says Harbormaster Ian Hilgendorf. “We’re excited to have forward-thinking boaters here who are mindful of their impact on the environment and also offer a high-end experience on the water for the community.”

Brunch cruises are $800 for up to six people from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., and sunset cruises are $1,200 for up to eight people from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. For the month of June, the company is offering 25 percent off all cruises plus an additional 10 percent off for the first 20 bookings.

“The eco-friendliness isn’t the only thing we love about the Sycorax,” says Allison Guilliom. “It’s just a gorgeous boat, and it’s beautifully appointed for hosting intimate parties on the water.”
