Study: Michigan Ranks 40th in AI Readiness Among States Based on Jobs, Education, Funding

Michigan ranks 40th among the 50 U.S. states, plus Washington, D.C., in preparedness for the artificial intelligence (AI) revolution based on jobs, education, and government funding, according to a new study from the New York-based AI learning platform Brainly.

Michigan ranks 40th among the 50 U.S. states, plus Washington, D.C., in preparedness for the artificial intelligence (AI) revolution based on jobs, education, and government funding, according to a new study from the New York-based AI learning platform Brainly.

Brainly says it used the most recent U.S. Census, U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics data, and National Center for Education Statistics, as well as sources of federal funding to develop the scores and ranking of each state.

Key measurements included the share of companies that use AI, AI-related degrees per capita, federal funding per $1 million of GDP, and the availability of high school foundational courses.

Michigan fell shortest in access to ultra high-speed internet at home (40.4 percent, No. 45) and businesses’ use of AI (7.5 percent, No. 32). It scored best on AI-related degrees among young people (109 per 10,000 people ages 20-24, No. 12).

The 10 most AI-ready locations, according to the study, are Washington, D.C., New Hampshire, Utah, Maryland, Massachusetts, Colorado, California, Washington State, Rhode Island, and Virginia.

The 10 least AI-ready states are Alaska, West Virginia, Maine, Louisiana, Idaho, New Mexico, Wisconsin, Oklahoma, Montana, and Mississippi.

“Taken together, these measurements offer a multidimensional view of which states are best positioned to lead — or lag — in the AI race. From education and workforce readiness to infrastructure and innovation funding, the ability to harness AI’s economic and societal potential hinges on a state’s investments across these key areas,” say Brainly officials. “Understanding these disparities is critical for shaping smart policy and targeting resources where they are needed most.”
