Sprint-RadioShack co-branded stores are expanding their presence in Michigan with the addition of 31 stores across the state.
“Sprint is excited for the opportunity to transform these RadioShack stores, and give our customers a brand new experience once our ‘store-within-a-store’ concept is complete,” says Karen Paletta, Sprint’s vice president for the Northeast Region. “We’re also thrilled to be able to bring dozens of jobs to Michigan as well.” Sprint will hire about 70 sales associates to staff the stores.
Paletta says the Sprint-RadioShack co-branded stores represent a new partnership between the two companies. Sprint occupies about one third of the retail space within the stores, and Sprint, Boost, and Virgin-branded mobile devices are exclusively sold.
After Radio Shack filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in February, the company reached an agreement with the hedge fund Standard General, RadioShack’s largest shareholder, to buy up to 2,400 of RadioShack’s 4,000 stores and co-brand them with Sprint.
Last week, General Wireless Inc., an affiliate of Standard General, acquired about 1,700 RadioShack stores. Sprint agreed with Standard General to be co-tenants in 1,435 of the 1,700 stores across the country.
RadioShack Corp., which took its name from small wooden structures that were built on ships to house radio equipment, was founded in 1921. The company had close to 10 stores and a thriving mail-order business, but it fell on hard times in the 1960s and was acquired by Tandy Corp. From there, the company grew rapidly, but in recent years, with the advent of powerful smartphones and tablets, the retailer saw its customer base dwindle.
