Powerley, a Royal Oak-based utility-led smart home technology company owned by DTE Energy in Detroit, today announced that AEP Ohio, an electric utility, has released its home energy management solution (mobile app) to its residential customers, making it one of the first utilities in the world to provide a real-time energy management experience.
The energy-driven smart home experience uses a mobile application called It’s Your Power, available to AEP Ohio’s 1.5 million residential customers through Google Play and the Apple Store. Customers already equipped with smart meters in their homes can request an Energy Bridge to access real-time data of the home’s energy usage.
The Energy Bridge also functions as a smart home hub, allowing users to control their smart devices including bulbs, switches, and sensors. Customers are also offered a Powerly Thermostat to balance HVAC energy usage with comfort. The mobile app, hardware, and product packaging are all customizable for any utility.
“Powerley is proud to partner with AEP Ohio as one of the first utilities globally to deliver the energy-driven smart home experience,” says Manoj Kumar, CEO of Powerley. “Powerley’s solution allows utilities to ‘go beyond the meter’ to swiftly innovate the customer experience by providing consumers with a real-time window into their energy usage. Bridging the smart home to the smart grid, utilities can drive innovation, efficiency, and engagement.”
Powerley’s initial internal technology test of the energy-driven smart home experience transitioned to AEP Ohio’s full-scale consumer product in less than 12 months. The mobile application reached more than 10,000 downloads in the first three months. The release of the energy management solution coincides with AEP Ohio’s expansion of its advanced metering infrastructure to 894,000 customers. DTE Energy and Royal Oak-based Vectorform worked together to develop Powerley.
