The former Cobblestone Manor Bed and Breakfast in Auburn Hills will be leased to Oakland University in Rochester for Honors College students as part of an agreement between the Moceri family and the university, officials announced Thursday.
The 6,166-square-foot building is located on about 1.5 acres at 3151 University Drive. The university will provide upgrades to the property. The building has been renamed the Frances M. Moceri Scholars House and will provide living quarters for the Moceri Scholars program, which is part of the Honors College.
“This opportunity provided by the Moceri family is another significant step in building upon what is already known about OU,” says Glenn McIntosh, vice president for student affairs and chief diversity officer. “Our Honors College offers a top-notch educational experience for aspirational students who will one day become leaders in their fields.
“The addition of Cobblestone Manor, now the Frances M. Moceri Scholars House, and the development of the Moceri Scholars program will only strengthen that tradition and enhance our student experience.”
Students in the Moceri Scholars program will be chosen based on academic merit, evidence of visionary and aspirational thinking, and commitment to helping others.
“Junior- and senior-standing students of the Honors College selected as Moceri Scholars will embrace and pursue the three leadership qualities of empathy, collaboration, and vision when considering our future national and global economic, social, and individual successes,” says Graeme Harper, dean of the Honors College.
Scholars in the house will host visiting speakers and discussion events on global, national, and local themes. There will also be research and social entrepreneurship opportunities, project exploration, and workshops.
The Moceri family arrived in Detroit from Sicily in the 1890s and ran a successful produce business. In the 1950s, the late Dominic Moceri launched a home-building company that today has built more than 55,000 residences in a wide array of styles — luxury homes, ranches, condominiums, apartments, manufactured homes, and senior living communities.
