Beverly Hills-based Premier Pet Supply is planning to open the first full-service pet supply store in downtown Detroit this summer when it launches on the first floor of the newly constructed City Club Apartments CBD Detroit.
Premier Pet Supply’s downtown Detroit store will be located on the ground floor of the seven-story City Club Apartments CBD Detroit at the corner of Washington Boulevard and Park Avenue. The approximately 2,500-square-foot store will face Grand Circus Park and carry a full line of national products, specialty items, and holistic goods.
It will cater to the needs of a wide customer base with a special focus on smaller living environments and the urban pet. From fish and small animals to cats and dogs, the Detroit store will have a broad selection of food, supplements, pet care, toys, and other items. It will carry more than 25 brands from Michigan-based companies, will have a do-it-yourself dog wash, and is considering local delivery services.
“For many years, my grandfather owned and operated Hamway Market, a neighborhood grocery store in Detroit near Olympia Stadium,” says Michael Palmer, CEO of Premier Pet Supply. “His store burned to the ground during the 1967 riots and he never rebuilt it. It broke his heart. He loved his store, customers, neighbors, and community. More than 50 years later, I am bringing my family business back to the city. It’s highly gratifying.”
Palmer, who started working for his uncle in the company’s first store in Beverly Hills while in high school, now owns six stores with a partner operator in each location.
“Our store operators are owners in the business,” says Palmer. “Our goal is to be immersed, engaged, and connected to our communities — never corporate. Our ownership formula ensures and reinforces that philosophy. My partners in our other stores, Jeff Nagarah, Steve Shamou, and Brandon Thorne, will all be partners in Detroit.”
City Club Apartments CEO Jonathan Holtzman, a long-time customer of Premier Pet Supply, approached Palmer five years ago and told him that he had tied up a great piece of property in Detroit’s CBD and was going to be building a best-in-class mixed-use apartment and penthouse community.
“He told me ‘you are going to be in it,’” recalls Palmer. Holtzman, who is known for his pet friendly urban apartment communities and his Holtzman Wildlife Foundation, has been a life-long animal advocate.
“We became fast friends and kept in close contact as the vision for City Club CBD Detroit took shape,” Palmer says. “When crunch time came, he told me that he would not take no for an answer. ‘You’re my guy. Let’s get this deal done.’” City Club Apartments CBD Detroit began pre-leasing its apartments and penthouse last week.
Palmer and Holtzman say they plan to host events, support local dog parks, rescue efforts, and leverage their combined experience, resources, and talents to make a difference in the city.
Premier Pet Supply’s downtown location is expected to open in the third quarter of this year when City Club Apartment CBD Detroit residents begin moving into the new community.
