Redford’s Piston Automotive, a subsidiary of the Piston Group in Southfield, has acquired Ohio’s Marion Industries, a Tier 1 assembler of brake modules for Honda of America. Marion was a member company of Ernie Green Industries. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Piston Group was formed by Detroit businessman and former NBA player Vinnie Johnson, who played for the Detroit Pistons. The acquisition expands Piston Automotive’s footprint into central Ohio and diversifies the company’s growing list of OEM customers.
“Transforming our business and accepting new challenges is required in order to compete in today’s marketplace,” says Johnson, founder, chairman, and CEO of Piston Group. “The acquisition of Marion Industries allows us to leverage our process design and product assembly expertise and diversify our customer base, which are two key elements of our growth strategy.”
Marion will operate as a Piston Automotive assembly plant location. Piston Group has operations in Michigan, Illinois, Ohio, Kentucky, Missouri, Texas, and Mexico.
Piston Group was founded in 1995 and employs nearly 10,000 people at more than 20 locations across North America. Last year, the firm posted revenues of $2.88 billion. Its companies include Piston Automotive, Irvin Products, Detroit Thermal Systems, and AIREA. It designs, engineers, assembles, and manufactures a variety of automotive parts and systems. AIREA is an office design studio and furniture dealer.
