Hunter Pasteur, the Forbes Co., and Oxford Capital Group — developers of the Perennial Corktown apartments in Detroit — announced today that two new retailers, Corktown Market and Haraz Coffee, will open in 2024.
“We are excited to welcome Corktown Market and Haraz coffee to the Perennial Corktown” says Seth Herkowitz, COO of Hunter Pasteur. “We wanted to make sure that the retailers we welcome to the space are going to meet the needs of our residents. Having both a bodega and a coffee shop are critical amenities that provide services not only to our residents, but to the entire neighborhood. They both will add so much to our resident’s living experience, and we look forward to more retail announcements to come.”
Corktown Market is a bodega-style grocery store that will provide groceries, prepared foods, and many other everyday items for the Corktown neighborhood. Owners Ahmed Alwhysee and Hadwan Hadwan say Corktown was a natural area to expand their business.
They said they were attracted to the vibrancy and diversity of the neighborhood and recognized the need for this type of market in the area. Like their other store, the Midtown Market on Cass Avenue, Corktown Market will provide a wide assortment of products like fresh baked Zingerman’s bread, to freshly ground coffee from La Colombe. Customers will also feature an in-house deli featuring meats and cheeses from Boar’s Head.
“The Corktown Market will not be a ritzy grocery store,” says Ahmed. “Instead, it aims to serve as a neighborhood bodega, offering convenience to countless neighbors while making it affordable.”
Haraz Coffee sells the traditional style Yemeni coffee. The company was founded in Dearborn, and now has 12 locations around the U.S. This will be their second location within the city of Detroit, with the other on Garfield Street in Midtown.
Haraz Coffee features refined Yemeni coffee roasts and authentic Yemeni-style drinks in an atmosphere that is a hallmark of the Yemeni coffee culture. Owner Hamzah Nasser says the buildout will feature a large customer area, so he could create a space encouraging people to socialize with friends or co-work with colleagues.
“Coffee is an experience,” says Nasser. “It is the first thing that brings me peace to start the day. We want to bring back that tradition of getting a cup of coffee, sitting down, and savoring it while working or relaxing.”
Haraz Coffee is also partnering with JJS Custard Co., a local Dearborn ice cream shop, to bring frozen treats to Corktown.
The Perennial Corktown development is set to open in the coming weeks, debuting 188 units, including a combination of studio, one-bedroom, and two-bedroom apartments, in addition to seven luxury three-bedroom townhomes.
Residential tenants of Perennial Corktown will have access to an array of on-site amenities, including an outdoor pool and deck area, community coworking space, a workout room with a yoga studio, an outdoor amenity deck, club room with private dining and rentable rooms, demo kitchen, and more. The goal is to create a strong community within the building.
