Painting with a Twist, a national chain that offers painting classes for novices, will open a studio in downtown Detroit today.

“With all the great things that are happening in Detroit it was just the right time, and when we found the space inside the Julian C. Madison Building, it just became the right place for us,” says Michelle Lewis, co-owner of Painting with a Twist Detroit, along with her sister, Donna Lewis.

Lewis says the 2,300-square-foot space, located on the first floor of the Madison Building at 1420 Washington Blvd., near the recently opened David Klein Gallery, has two studios.

Painting with a Twist offers two- to three-hour painting classes ranging from $35 to $45. All painting supplies are provided, and promising artists are provided with hands-on instructions. At the end of each session, customers can take their creation home. The artwork classes range from landscapes, abstracts, and cityscapes, to animals and flowers. Guests are encouraged to bring wine to the classes.

Michelle Lewis opened her first Painting with a Twist franchise in Ferndale, located at 320 W. Nine Mile Rd., in 2010, and her second in Farmington in 2012, located at 33033 Grand River Ave.

Painting with a Twist, founded in 2009 in Louisiana, has more than 250 franchise locations across the nation. The company also has studios in Ann Arbor, Dearborn, Rochester Hills, and Shelby Township, among others.

A grand opening for the Detroit location will be held at 5:30 tonight. For more information, call 313-960-4793 or email studio099@paintingwithatwist.com.
