OABI, a seven-mile paddle race around Belle Isle that offers live music and food trucks, will return to Detroit on August 8.

“OABI Detroit is such a unique event,” says Larry Balone, co-founder of OABI Detroit. “The people in the paddle community and the event are very inclusive. Even without access to a stand-up paddleboard or kayak, our attendees have the chance to experience the sport in a class taught by professional instructors on a vessel provided by local manufacturers and shops.

OABI, which stands for Once Around Belle Isle, started in 2012 with 25 paddlers. The program was expanded in 2014 to include opportunities for stand-up paddlers, kayakers, and rowers. Trophies go to both the mens’ and womens’ winners for each of the stand-up paddling, kayak, and rowing races.

The race also has a “Beach Fest” component, with live music, food trucks, and games. In turn, classes will be offered during the day for people new to paddling and kayaking.
