NYC Interior Designer to Highlight Furniture Collection in Royal Oak

Jamie Drake, a New York City-based interior designer who counts Madonna and former NYC Mayor Michael Bloomberg among his clients, is headed to Scott Shuptrine Interiors’ Royal Oak location to introduce his new furniture collection.

“(Furniture manufacturer) Theodore Alexander is known for the meticulous quality of its upholstery and cased goods,” Drake says. “They had me create a collection that exemplifies my rather sophisticated, urbane, joyful, and colorful point-of-view that I use in my own interior design business.”

While Drake’s firm, Drake Design Associates, is best known for residential design, he notes that his team often does commercial projects. Currently, the firm is working on its third radiation and oncology clinic in Jacksonville, Fla.

“Whether a project is residential or commercial, one has to first and foremost answer the program’s needs practically,” Drake says. “Just as in residential, one wouldn’t use pale pink silk in a house with two year olds and dogs, one should be highly attuned to the specific type of use (the space) is going to get.”

Drake last visited the region in 2007 to discuss his book, New American Glamour, at the Michigan Design Center in Troy. “That was quite a few years ago, so I’m looking forward to coming back.”

The free event will be held from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Feb. 25, with a presentation by Drake at 7 p.m. That day, all Scott Shuptrine stores, including Grand Rapids, Novi, Royal Oak, and Petoskey, will offer 35 percent off Drake’s furnishings.

Drake says he will be introducing some new pieces to the collection in April, following by a new collection introduction in the fall.
