Thompson & Co., a restaurant featuring southern cuisine and spirits, will officially open in Ypsilanti’s Depot Town on the historic Thompson Block, which recently underwent a $10 million renovation project that took five years.

“We’re excited to bring Thompson & Co. to Ypsilanti’s Depot Town,” says owner Jon Carlson, “The Thompson Block has a vast, rich history with such importance, and we are honored to be part of its future.”

The location will offer indoor and outdoor dining across 11,000 square feet, along with private dining spaces. The bar is a hand-crafted focal point of the restaurant, with repurposed wood from a large oak tree removed so the building could be properly restored. The rest of the repurposed wood was used for tables and a mural handcrafted by Michigan Reconstructed.

Executive Chef Keith Martin crafted the menu drawing inspiration from southern cuisine, with an emphasis on comfort food. Nashville hot chicken, a fried green tomato BLT, and shrimp and grits are partnered with traditional comfort foods like macaroni and cheese and grilled salmon.

Other menu items include grilled salmon, brisket sandwich, fried chicken pizza, flat iron steak, cobb salad, and desserts such as bananas foster and preach cobbler with vanilla ice cream.

The bar will feature Jolly Pumpkin beer from Dexter, and North Peak beer from Traverse City on tap, with a rotating selection of bottled Michigan craft beers. The cocktail menu also draws inspiration from southern flavors and will include specialty non-alcoholic options.

Mash Whiskey bar will open in the building at a later date, and will focus on whiskey, bourbon, and beer. The repurposed wood designed will carry over into the bar that will feature oversized leather chairs. Guests will be able to enjoy a limited version of the Thompson & Co. menu and live entertainment on weekends.
