The Michigan Public Service Commission (MPSC) has approved DTE Energy’s CleanVision Integrated Resource Plan 14 days after a settlement agreement was reached between DTE and nearly two dozen organizations from across Michigan.

This 20-year plan transforms how DTE Energy generates electricity that adapts to how the company’s customers live and work today while meeting the energy demands of tomorrow, according to DTE.

Among the plan’s highlights are DTE Electric surpassing its previously announced carbon emission reduction goals — targeting 65 percent in five years (2028), 85 percent in nine years (2032), 90 percent by 2040, and net zero carbon emissions by 2050.

It also has DTE developing enough Michigan-made renewable energy to power the equivalent of more than 4 million homes. The plan also doubles DTE’s current energy storage capacity by building more than 1,800 megawatts of storage. It calls for meeting both targets by 2042.

Other highlights include:

  • DTE directing an additional $110 million to support its most vulnerable customers through income-qualified home energy efficiency programs, customer affordability programs, and access to clean energy resources.
  • Ends DTE’s use of coal in 2032 with a responsible, phased retirement schedule of the Belle River and Monroe coal power plants — reducing the company’s use of coal from 77 percent in 2005 to 0 percent in less than three decades.
  • A broad range of stakeholders from across Michigan signed asettlement agreement that was submitted to the MPSC for approval earlier this month. Signatories to the settlement agreement include DTE Electric, MPSC staff, representatives of Michigan’s environmental community, key business and labor organizations, and energy industry associations.

“We want to thank the Michigan Public Service Commission for approving our CleanVision Plan,” says Jerry Norcia, chairman and CEO of DTE Energy. “This has been a collaborative process, with input from key stakeholders, to ensure we have the best plan possible for our 2.3 million customers and the state of Michigan. We are transforming how we generate electricity — with the goal of getting as clean as we can as fast as we can — while ensuring we continue to produce energy that is reliable and affordable.”
