The Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute, part of Grand Blanc-based McLaren Health Care, has completed its $48 million, 50,000-square-foot expansion at its Lawrence and Idell Weisberg Cancer Center in Farmington Hills.

The completion of this fourth and final phase marks the end of the expansion project, which increased the facility’s service offerings, making it a full-service outpatient oncology center.

“The expansion allows us to better address the emotional aspect of patient care by providing larger areas for comfort and support,” says Dr. Jordan Maier, medical director of the Weisberg Cancer Center. “We thank the city of Farmington Hills, businesses and residential neighbors surrounding our center for their patience and recognition of the need for comprehensive cancer care in their community.”

The expansion and renovations at Weisberg include new imaging equipment and expanded spaces, 3-D mammography, ultrasound and x-ray capability, a women’s corridor, an interventional radiology suite, a newly designed radiation oncology suite, and a brand-new infusion center.

Also new is state-of-the-art nuclear medicine, including a gamma camera; bone density scanning; new procedure suite; additional large exam rooms; more expanded dressing rooms; new retail pharmacy space and services; expanded lobby and wait areas; addition of a snack and nourishment area; an expanded healing arts space; more private treatment areas; a massage therapy area; and a new entryway canopy and front door.

Karmanos established a presence in Oakland County with the opening of the now Weisberg Cancer Center in 2001 and quickly outgrew its capacity. Understanding the need for giving patients more services in Farmington Hills, Karmanos increased the clinic’s footprint from 17,700-square-feet to nearly 68,000.

“Our newly expanded Farmington Hills facility is an illustration of our continuing commitment to provide state-of-the-art cancer services to the communities we serve,” says Brian Gamble, president of Karmanos Cancer Hospital. “We have added a new Leksell Gamma Knife Icon to treat brain tumors, increased the size and number of exam rooms, expanded our radiology suite and expanded the size and capacity of our infusion center.

“The Farmington Hills location is an extension of the world class care Karmanos provides at its Detroit location, and we are pleased to expand our capabilities to the Farmington Hills and surrounding communities.”
