Benton Harbor-based Jenn-Air is expanding its line of Wi-Fi-connected kitchen appliances with the introduction of a refrigerator with an app providing remote control of the refrigerator’s settings. The 72-inch refrigerator, which will retail for about $4,600, will go on sale this winter.

Brian Maynard, marketing director of Jenn-Air, says customers will be able to download the app on an Apple or Android device and choose from a range of notifications, such as a loss of connectivity or a door being left open. He says a special mode allows for remotely activating specific appliance behavior such as making extra ice when entertaining or decreasing refrigerator temperatures if doors will be opened more frequently.

Maynard says the app also allows the refrigerator to be controlled remotely to help optimize conditions for the refrigerator’s contents, like activating the “Max Cool” setting before returning home with a large batch of groceries. The app also includes links to purchase related items and provide access to online support and instructions.

The French-door refrigerator has a black interior and is counter-depth.

“While unexpected in a refrigerator interior, black really adds a modern sophistication that has been very well received by designers and high-end consumers alike,” Maynard says.

Jenn-Air also offers a Wi-Fi-connected wall oven. Last week, the company introduced a downdraft cooktop.
