Inaugural Detroit Car Week Comes to Hart Plaza

On the heels of the Woodward Dream Cruise, the inaugural Detroit Car Week runs today through Thursday, Aug. 24, at Hart Plaza in downtown Detroit. The free event will offer afternoon and evening car show sessions, musical entertainment, and exhibitions by the Detroit Roller Derby.

In addition, there will be race car simulators, slot cars, a pit stop challenge, nightly drive-in movies, and food trucks. The event runs from 10:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. The presenting sponsor is Quicken Loans Inc. in Detroit. by Ferndale-based The Social Connection and Ultimate Fun Productions are the event producers.

Both car clubs and individuals are welcome to park and showcase their classic, muscle, performance, or other niche cars for either an individual session or the full day. The car show sessions run daily from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. and 4-8 p.m. Everyone who registers will receive up to four inaugural event lanyards, and each car owner receives a complimentary Detroit Car Week branded t-shirt for participating.

In addition, today through Wednesday, Detroit Car Week will present a different drive-in movie beginning at 8 p.m. Guests are encouraged to bring their classic cars or lawn chairs, while the Detroit Roller Derby girls will be acting as carhops during the movie. Registration for car owners looking to participate in the car shows or drive-in is free.

“The Woodward Dream Cruise is an iconic Detroit area event and we’re excited for it to have a strong presence downtown this year’” says George Roberts, director of community activation at Quicken Loans. “Detroit Car Week is more than just a continuation of the Dream Cruise, it’s a celebration of the city’s rich automobile history and the arts, music, and food that make Detroit unique.”

A portion of the proceeds from Detroit Car Week will benefit The Detroit Animal Welfare Group (DAWG) and the Community Health & Social Services (CHASS) of Southwest Detroit.
