The U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation will host a Hiring Our Heroes job fair for military veterans and their spouses on March 1. The free event will include employment opportunities and workshops covering resume building, job search tools, and interviewing techniques.

More than 80 companies from across metro Detroit will participate in the event at the John Dingell VA Medical Center,4646 John R. Among them will be Verizon Communications, Ford Motor Co., PNC Bank, U.S. Customs and Border Patrol, and the Michigan State Police.

“At a time when so many businesses are searching for skilled workers, we think they should look no further than our nation’s military men and women,” says Kim Morton, spokeswoman for the event. “Veterans bring a discipline and skill set to the table that is unique because of their military service.”

In addition, Morton says military spouses must endure long separations, making it difficult to fulfill their own career aspirations. She adds military spouses volunteer at three times the national average and take leadership roles in their places of worship, schools, and communities.

“They have managed multiple moves and multiple deployments with little or no preparation, often by themselves,” Morton says. “Their resilience and dedication are unparalleled.”

The Hiring Our Heroes job fair, which runs from 1-4 p.m., is open to all U.S. active duty service members, guard and reserve components, veterans, and spouses. Job seekers can register at hiringourheroes.org or in person at the fair. Veterans and military staff must provide proof of service.
