Zeeland-based furniture and design company Herman Miller Inc. will open its first permanent retail location in New York City in the city’s Gramercy Park neighborhood. The flagship showroom is now open, while the retail component will open by the end of the year.

“The opening of the flagship marks a purposeful shift in our efforts to connect with consumers in a new and impactful way,” says Brian Walker, CEO of Herman Miller. “Having a branded retail store in a major U.S. market will further cement Herman Miller as a premium lifestyle brand — and reinforce the totality of our efforts as a corporation.”

Walker says the 60,000-square-foot showroom and retail space, located at 251 Park Avenue South, will feature textiles and coverings from Maharam, furnishings from Geiger, furniture and accessories from Design Within Reach, and a range of furnishings from Herman Miller.

Herman Miller occupies about half of the building, with the Herman Miller and Geiger showrooms located on floors two through five. The retail store will be located on the ground floor.

Walker says floors two through four feature Herman Miller’s “Living Office” workspaces, where its houses the company full New York operations, including regional sales leadership, global marketing, brand design, and media and communications.

The building served as the home of George Nelson and Associates from 1962 to 1973—during the final decade of Nelson’s tenure as design director for Herman Miller. It has housed the corporate offices of Maharam since 1992.
