Flint-based HealthPlus of Michigan and Health Alliance Plan in Detroit today announced the merger between the two companies has been approved. The company will maintain the Health Alliance Plan name and will be headquartered in Detroit.
“This merger creates a larger, stronger, more competitive company with a solid portfolio of comprehensive products and opportunities for growth,” says Dr. Mike Genord, president and CEO of HealthPlus. “As a united Michigan-based nonprofit company, we are committed to providing excellent coverage, care, and customer service for our members and customers, who will always be our top priority.”
The combined company has about 1,300 employees serving 650,000 members.
Genord says HealthPlus of Michigan will offer the combined company an expanded presence in Flint, with the addition of its facilities, employees, products, and service areas. The HealthPlus brand will remain while HealthPlus operations transition into Health Alliance Plan.
“HealthPlus and Health Alliance Plan members can be confident their existing benefit plan and coverage will stay the same,” says Matt Walsh, COO of Health Alliance Plan.
In October, the two companies signed a letter of intent to merge operations. Following a due diligence period, they announced in November a definitive agreement to merge.
Health Alliance Plan, founded in 1960, is a subsidiary of the Henry Ford Health System. HealthPlus of Michigan was founded in 1979 in Flint.
